So we're getting ready to start looking at cribs, bedding, high chairs, car sets and all kinds of other things we need for when our bundle of joy arrives in early August and is it ever overwhelming. You could really go crazy thinking you need all sorts of things for baby, spend close to a fortune and possibly not even have all of the things you "really need." That's why I'm writing this blog. Many of you have been there and done that, so I wanted to get some honest feedback from you as to the things you need and the things you don't need when it comes to preparing for a first baby. Don't hold back, I'd love to know what not to buy, what to buy, what I don't even need, things I can never have enough of and on and on and on!
Any help/advice you have would be WONDERFUL! Thanks for stopping by and reading our blog.

Well I would say not to buy a bumper for the crib. Now adays they say that is a big risk for SIDS. Alot of diapers and bottles. Make sure if you are going to let your baby have a pacifer that you have more than one. They get lost very very easy.

Hey Dan & Michelle - I remember you guys from Madison! Was having a "real busy" day at work surfing the Internet for radio stations and lo and behold, there you are! Concerning subject at hand Joann is absolutely correct. Do not get a crib bumper pad. Besides SIDs there are entanglement issues with these. Being a Product Safety Engineer for children's playground equipment I have a lot of experience with juvenille products. Speaking strictly from a safety stanpoint one of the best things you can do is visit the Consumer Product Safety Commission website (www.cpsc.gov) click on the "Recalls and Product Safety News" tab. Then select "Search by Product Type". They have everything from Baby Feeding Items to Walkers. Yes, Bumper Pads are there as well. That way you will be more knowledgeable in case you are tempted to pick something up at a garage sale. By the way congrats and remember- A baby is like instant coffee. It's easy to make and keeps you awake all night.

Buying for baby - wow - everyone's got an opinon on this! :) Personally, I've done high-end, low-end, middle-of-the ground, and hand-me-downs with my 3 boys (now 19, 14 and 10). Really - it all boils down to what you like...'cause the little one grows so fast that you never get full use of the stuff anyways! :) One of my boys was in a walker at 2 weeks - because he really liked to be propped in it and stretch his legs. Another one practically lived in his swing (get the one without the overhead bar to avoid "bonks" on the head getting in and out), and my youngest preferred a "snuggie" and to be held and cuddled a lot. One of my boys preferred Dolly Parton and Randy Travis music. :) There are two things I would definitely recommend: if you're going to go the route of pacifiers, make sure you have a bunch of them 'cause there's nothing worse than a fussy baby, a lost pacifier and having to go to Walgreen's in the middle of the night! :) The other thing is, if you have a yard, plant a dwarf fruit tree or a rose bush or something that will blossom and grow as your baby grows. It's a fun way to commemorate the passing years. Best of luck!!! :)
